Curtis Jones scores the winner as Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield

The midfielder celebrated the birth of his first child last week by scoring the winner at Anfield to settle an entertaining Premier League clash.

Jones scored in the 51st minute to restore the hosts’ lead, shortly after Nicolas Jackson converted Mohamed Salah’s opener from the penalty spot.

The result keeps the Reds at the top of the league table, one point ahead of Manchester City.

Team news

Caoimhin Kelleher replaced the injured Alisson Becker in goal, making his 50th appearance for the club. Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai returned to the starting eleven.

Kelleher, Van Dijk, Konate, Szoboszlai, Salah, Jones (Mac Allister, 81), Gakpo (Diaz, 65), Jota (Nunez, 30), Robertson, Gravenberch, Alexander-Arnold (Gomez, 81).

Unused substitutes: Jaros, Endo, Tsimikas, Quansah, Morton.

First half

An even start didn’t produce many clear-cut chances; In fact, neither team attempted a shot in the first 20 minutes.

Cody Gakpo parried Robert Sanchez’s attempted pass from behind, but the rebound was easy for the lucky Chelsea goalkeeper to catch.

However, the game came to life around the 25th minute.

Jones made a heroic save to deny Cole Palmer a seemingly certain goal, while at the other end Salah’s request for a penalty after a Levi Colwill tackle was rejected.

But Colwill’s next attack in the penalty area – against Jones two minutes later – was ruled a foul by referee John Brookes.

Salah stepped up and, after a considerable delay, sent Sanchez the wrong way with a powerful shot.
