U.S. stock futures were little changed on Sunday evening after the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 posted their best weekly winning streaks of 2024.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 36 points, or 0.08%. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.09% and 0.08%, respectively.

The moves come after both the S&P 500 and the 30-stock Dow hit all-time highs on Friday, consolidating their sixth straight weekly advance, the best this year for both benchmarks. The S&P 500 ended the week up 0.85%, while the Dow closed up 0.96%. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.80%.

Whether stocks can maintain these gains may depend largely on whether companies can beat expectations in this earnings season, which is set to gain momentum this week. About a fifth of S&P 500 companies are expected to report by Friday.

So far the results have been mixed. According to FactSet’s John Butters, 79% of the 14% of S&P 500 companies that have already reported third-quarter results have beaten expectations. However, the extent of these beatings was rather lackluster, he noted.

The recent winning streak has investors optimistic that stocks have more to continue. However, they are aware that stretched valuations ahead of the US presidential election and rising geopolitical risks could also lead to further volatility.

“If we don’t really get the kind of confirmation that the market is worth this elevated price, then we could see a digestion of earnings pretty soon,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.

On the economic front, leading indicators for September will be released on Monday at 10 a.m. ET.
