Lots of warm days this week

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Pleasant weather will continue to begin the week, but the search for rain will continue in SWLA.

KPLC First Alert Forecast(KPLC)

A nice start to the day awaits on Monday. Temperatures near sunrise are expected to be in the mid 40s to low 50s away from the coast. So, like last week, it’s a good idea to bring a sweater or light jacket. However, these won’t be needed in the afternoon as highs will be in the low to mid 80s and there will be plenty of sun!

High pressure near us will slide slightly to the east this week. This will cause temperatures to rise to over 80° by midweek. Low temperatures will also be slightly warmer, ranging from the mid 50s to low 60s through Wednesday evening. Some longer range models suggest a weak cold front could approach later in the week. Even if that happens, we don’t expect temperatures to drop as much (if at all) as the last one, and rain remains very unlikely throughout the week. This means we need to be careful when engaging in outdoor activities and it is still a good idea to avoid getting burned. At least some fire risk is likely to remain for some time.

With still no rain in sight, much of SWLA remains at drought level 2/4 (severe) on the U.S. Drought Monitor. An extension or worsening of the moderate drought we are in is entirely possible in the next update next Thursday. Burn bans now include Calcasieu, Jeff Davis, Allen, Beauregard and Vernon parishes.

There is a named system in the Atlantic called Oscar. Oscar quickly became a hurricane this past weekend, but the disturbance with Cuba will weaken it. The system is expected to be pulled back northward by an upper trough and remain well away from the SWLA.
