SEC fines Texas 0,000 after trash-throwing incident

Texas was fined $250,000 by the SEC after the school’s football fans threw objects onto the field during Saturday night’s loss to Georgia, the conference announced.

The game was delayed for several minutes after Longhorns fans threw bottles and other objects onto the court to protest a pass interference call by officials on a Texas player.

“The throwing of debris and resulting disruption of play that occurred Saturday evening cannot be part of an SEC event,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement.

“The SEC is delegated by its members the responsibility to enforce its sports and game management policies, and these actions are consistent with that oversight responsibility, including financial penalties and mandatory reviews.”

Not only will Texas pay a hefty fine, but the SEC is also requiring the school to find out who is responsible for throwing objects onto the field.

Texas is “committed to using all available resources, including security, stadium and television video, to identify individuals who have thrown objects onto the field or at the opposing team.”

The SEC said anyone Texas finds responsible for these actions will be banned from attending school sporting events for the remainder of the 2024 season.

The precipitating incident that inspired fans to throw this debris occurred when SEC officials penalized Texas defensive back Jahden Barron for an erroneous pass interference violation.

That penalty took a Longhorns takeaway off the board, as Barron intercepted Georgia quarterback Carson Beck on the play in question.

Ironically, the delay caused by the unruly fans gave the referees extra time to reconsider the penalty and, in a somewhat unprecedented move, they raised the flag and wiped away the penalty.

But that won’t stop the SEC from demanding compensation from Texas for all the pollution.
