SENIOR NEWS LINE: Free COVID testing available again

By Matilda Charles

Here we go again. Another winter, another COVID variant. This is called XEC and is currently on the rise and is replacing the variant KP.3.1.1. It’s time to get those home COVID testing kits out and keep them handy.

The problem with the test kits is that all the free kits we have ordered over the past few years have now expired and do not have an additional renewal date. In order to have the tests on hand at home, some of us have spent a lot of money at the drugstore to buy some. Fortunately, the government is now releasing millions of kits from its stockpile to be sent free to those who want them.

If you would like to order free test kits, do not hesitate. Go online to CovidTests.gov and like previous years, you can sign up to receive four test kits. These are delivered by the post office.

When you receive your test kits, be prepared – the expiration dates will probably already have expired. However, they have already extended the dates for all test kits they are currently shipping. The appointments won’t be long in coming, but you should be able to get through several months of testing.

To check the expiration dates of the tests you are receiving, go back to the CovidTests.gov ordering page and click on “FDA List of Extended Expiration Dates.” Scroll down to find your tests and check the box with new expiration dates.

We are told that the older test kits are still effective with the current COVID variants that currently exist.

If you or a family member tests positive and are wondering how to pay for treatment, scroll down on the same CovidTests.gov page and see the link to available treatment options and patient assistance programs.

Stay healthy!
