Readings: New York Times columnist David Brooks, a conservative who can’t stand Trump, asked the question that a few hundred million people at home and abroad are asking about Kamala Harris: “Why the hell doesn’t she run with this?” He provides some compelling answers: “Parties used to be political organizations aimed at winning elections and gaining power. To this end, party leaders would expand their coalitions. Today, however, in an increasingly secular age, political parties are seen more as religious organizations that exist to provide meaning, membership, and moral sanctification to believers. Of course, if that is your goal, you must adhere to the existing gospel. You must focus your attention on confirming the creed of the current true believers. You get so caught up in the walls of your own catechism that you can’t even imagine what it would be like to think outside of it. When parties were primarily political organizations, they were led by elected officials and party bosses. Now that parties are more like quasi-religions, the power lies with the priesthood—the scattered group of media figures, podcast hosts, and activists who guide the conversation, define the party’s orthodoxy, and set the boundaries of acceptable belief. […] Harris clearly understands the problem. She has tried to use her campaign to show that she agrees with the majority opinion. In a classic 2018 More in Common report, only 45 percent of the most liberal group in the poll said they were proud to be Americans. But Harris decked her convention to the rafters with patriotic symbols. She is now running explicitly on the topic: country before party. But in the few months she has had to campaign, Harris has failed to transform the entire face of the Democratic Party. Furthermore, her gestures were all stylistic; It has not challenged democratic orthodoxy on any substantive issue. Ultimately, candidates no longer have ultimate power over what the party stands for. The priesthood – the people who dominate the national conversation – have the power.” Meanwhile: The polls continue to tighten.

People were and are creators of myths who take up the significant by leaving out the trivial in order to make the world understandable. If professional historians balk and reject the role of creators of global myths, whether through inertia or misguided scruples about perceived indeterminacy, others will surely step in to fill the gap. For the human mind desperately demands that historical experiences have form and meaning – at least in retrospect – simply because events as actually experienced in the present are so turbulent, surprising and incomprehensible. They simply have to be brought into form later, otherwise they will be banished from human consciousness. After all, we have enough background noise to distract us without caring about the mess that befell our predecessors, unless their encounter with the world can be made understandable by competent and conscientious historians.
