Juan Soto’s game-winning home run in the 10th inning in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday night essentially propelled the Yankees past the Cleveland Guardians and into the World Series, where they will face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the New York Mets. The Yankees are a team with so much success that it’s difficult to list them, but even by those lofty standards, what Soto did is one of the greatest moments in franchise history.

As you know, something like this from Soto is not surprising. He is one of the best hitters in all of baseball and was at his best for the Yankees in his first season in the Bronx. At least when the World Series is decided, the question is whether this will be Sotos only Season in the Bronx. The Yankees acquired him in a trade with the Padres knowing that 2024 would be his run year – knowing that Soto was likely committed to the free agency process and that, as a 25-year-old with tremendous numbers, he would do so Command the largest non-Shohei Ohtani contract in MLB history.

However, the Yankees have more than enough resources to pay market rates (and then some) for a franchise player like Soto. But will they? In the aftermath of the decisive pennant, Soto’s teammate Jazz Chisholm Jr. took the opportunity to make a simple request to owner Hal Steinbrenner, who may have been within earshot:

“Pay my guy! Pay Juan Soto!”

Here to watch and listen:

What is certain is that someone will pay Juan Soto. No less a voice than Chisholm’s says someone better be the Yankees.
