Leading college football reporters were impressed by the failed call in the Georgia-Texas game

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger and ESPN’s Pete Thamel were both stunned when the referees overturned a key third-quarter call that would lead directly to a Texas touchdown against Georgia in the main game of Week 8 at DKR Stadium.

Bulldogs QB Carson Beck threw an interception to Longhorns DB Jahdae Barron, which was returned to the Georgia nine-yard line. Initially, Barron was called for defensive pass interference, but after fans in Austin threw trash onto the field, the referees discussed the play and decided to knock down the flag. Quinn Ewers found Jaydon Blue for a 17-yard TD pass after losing eight yards to a sack the game before.

Dellenger called the scene “a mess,” while noting Kirby Smart’s heated reaction to the confusing sequence of events.

“Holy shit,” Dellenger began before saying, “The officials just lifted the pass interference after conferring with each other during the break to pick up the trash that the students had thrown onto the field.”

“Kirby Smart loses his temper. It’s chaos at DRK.”

Thamel noted that this will be a reversed penalty that will be remembered for years to come.

“This revocation of the PI call will be talked about for a LONG time,” Thamel tweeted. “It seems like the right decision, but man, that’s a rare reversal on the field.”

Georgia-Texas Week 8 college football game filled with controversy

Had the flag not been toppled, there would still be significant controversy at the Georgia-Texas game.

After denying any QB controversy in his room, Steve Sarkisian sparked some by subbing Arch Manning for Quinn Ewers before the end of the first half. The substitution didn’t last and Ewers quickly returned to the field in the second half.

The SEC delivered once again in its Saturday Game of the Week on ABC. Controversies and stuff.
