Rain still seems rare in a warmer week

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – A quiet end to the weekend is expected across SWLA, although daytime temperatures will be right back above normal.

KPLC First Alert Forecast(KPLC)

You’ve probably heard this before, but the warm and dry weather doesn’t let up as the weekend comes to a close. Highs are expected in the low to mid 80s, warmer than last week’s cool temperatures. A noticeable easterly breeze ensures limited humidity.

We still don’t expect any changes in dry behavior this week. High pressure remains under control, causing temperatures to rise into the mid-80s. Nighttime lows will warm up a bit, but should stay in the 50s at least through Monday night, if not longer. Some longer range models suggest a weak cold front could approach later in the week. Even if that happens, we don’t expect temperatures to drop as sharply as we’ve seen recently, and rain remains very unlikely throughout the week. This means we need to be careful when engaging in outdoor activities and it is still a good idea to avoid getting burned.

With still no rain in sight, much of SWLA has been upgraded to drought level 2/4 (severe) on the U.S. Drought Monitor. An extension or worsening of the moderate drought we are in is entirely possible in the next update next Thursday. Burn bans now include Calcasieu, Jeff Davis, Allen, Beauregard and Vernon parishes.

Hurricane Oscar
Hurricane Oscar(KPLC)

A few systems formed quickly in the Atlantic this weekend, namely Nadine and Oscar. Nadine landed in Belize and is expected to dissipate on Sunday. Oscar, on the other hand, quickly developed into a hurricane and is likely to hit Cuba late Sunday or early Monday. However, it is still expected to be pulled back northward by an upper trough and remain well away from the SWLA. Further information can be found at:
