In the Kyle Shanahan-led San Francisco 49ers’ fight to overcome the hurdle and win the Super Bowl, there was one constant: every time they came close to laying their hands on the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 1994, the The Kansas City Chiefs stood in their way.

With three Super Bowls since 2019, the Chiefs have built much of their dynasty on the backs of the 49ers as they defeated San Francisco in both Super Bowls LIV and LVIII. Both were epic contests — particularly last year’s Super Bowl, in which the two teams played nearly a full quarter of overtime before Kansas City delivered the final blow — and both robbed the 49ers of a championship the Bay Area is so desperate for longs. With the Chiefs aiming for third place in the league this season, Kansas City is once again standing in the way of San Francisco’s Super Bowl ambitions. But this weekend they have a chance to take a step in that direction as the 49ers host the Chiefs in Northern California.

While a win over the Chiefs can’t really avenge the 49ers’ recent Super Bowl loss, a victory over the 0-5 Chiefs can go a long way toward proving that this year’s team has what it takes to be the greatest Game to return from everyone. While the 49ers are just 3-3, they enter this game with an NFC West division win over the Seattle Seahawks and are in position to take control of their division by going over .500.
