Tuskegee University hosts its first military appreciation fly-in

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (WSFA) – In a city known for breaking barriers in aviation, Tuskegee University is honoring that history while inspiring military appreciation for future generations with its first fly-in.

Twelve pilots flew over Tuskegee University Stadium before the Golden Tigers took on Kentucky State on Saturday.

“It’s very humbling to be here at Moton Field, with the history you see in the background, with the museum and the generations of pilots who have learned to fly here,” said pilot Dean “Gumby” Martin of the Full Throttle Formation Team.

For former Tuskegee Mayor and current City Councilman Johnny Ford, the event was very special.

“Fifty years ago, Chief Anderson said to me, ‘You can’t be mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama, without flying.’ “I’ll give you a month,” Ford said. “So it makes me very, very happy to be able to stand now and see all these young people excited about flying.”

The event was part of Tuskegee University’s Fall Day.
