Kenny Dillingham sparks a viral trend with eye-catching challenge to ASU’s position group

Kenny Dillingham sparked a viral trend among ASU students after he threw his Sun Devils placekicker unit under the bus following a 24-14 loss to Cincinnati that ended their two-game winning streak.

“Our kicking game is atrocious,” Dillingham said during a heated postgame speech on Oct. 19. “If you can kick and are at Arizona State, email me. We’re going to do kick tryouts on Monday… I’m absolutely serious.

This inspired several viral posts. One came from Arizona State junior Nolan Krinsky, who scored an accompanying field goal through the uprights from midfield.

“I would like to try out for the ASU football team,” Krinsky tweeted. “I’m a kicker, punter, placeholder and I’ve been trying to make the team for three years and I love kicking and putting in the work. Kenny Dillingham, if you give me a try, I promise you I won’t disappoint.”

Dillingham’s shot was aimed at Ian Hershey, who lost 0/2. The Sun Devils wouldn’t have won the game with these two field goals, but they slowed down any momentum.

Kenny Dillingham is overly harsh on ASU kickers after poor offensive performance

Dillingham may have done well with its kicker, but it’s not like its offense played well either. In fact, the Sun Devils were just 4/12 on third down and Jeff Sims was 12/23 with 155 yards.

The loss of Sam Leavitt was a serious dagger. Sims is a bit one-dimensional and RB Cameron Skattebo wasn’t the hero he was in Week 7 against Utah.

Dillingham went too far. But at least he shows fighting spirit. ASU was a rudderless ship for years under Herm Edwards; whose program is still subject to postmortem violations. Under the 34-year-old’s leadership, the Sun Devils are moving in the right direction.
