CLEMSON – No. 9 Clemson football defeated Virginia on Saturday, winning 48-31 at Memorial Stadium.

Like last week, the Tigers started slowly on offense but found their rhythm and defeated the Cavaliers (4-3, 2-2 ACC). They found themselves behind at home for the first time this season, but bounced back with another dominant performance from their defence. Clemson (6-1, 5-0) secured its sixth straight win and ruined Cavaliers coach Tony Elliott’s homecoming.

Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik wasn’t as sharp as usual, throwing three touchdowns and an interception, but wide receiver Antonio Williams shined, scoring a pass and rush touchdown for the Tigers. Defensively, Clemson recorded one turnover and four sacks.

Clemson next begins an open week before returning to face Louisville on Nov. 2 at Memorial Stadium.

Clemson vs. Virginia results updates

The Tigers earned their sixth straight win and fifth straight conference win, extending their lead in the ACC. They defeated Virginia and continued their overall dominance as they eye a playoff appearance.

Clemson leads the all-time series against Virginia 41-10-1.

The fireworks late in the game continued when Virginia’s backup quarterback Tony Muskett found Ethan Davies for a 75-yard touchdown after a broken coverage on the first play of the Cavaliers’ drive.

With the game out of reach, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney brought Klubnik back into the game after the two-minute timeout for Christopher Vizzina and he connected with wide receiver TJ Moore for a 34-yard score.

With both teams’ reserves in place, Virginia outscored Clemson’s, pulling off a quick drive, scoring a touchdown and converting a two-point conversion.

The Tigers managed a 14-play, 70-yard drive that equaled a Hauser field goal. Hauser is 2-on-2 on Saturday.

It was Clemson’s fourth drive of more than 10 plays in the game.

After five scoreless drives since the second quarter, Virginia finds the end zone. Quarterback Anthony Colandrea found wide receiver Malachi Fields for a 45-yard touchdown, capping Clemson’s 35-0 run.

Clemson used the turnover to score again. On fourth down, Klubnik found Patt-Henry for a 40-yard touchdown after an underthrow. Klubnik looked shaky throughout Saturday’s game, but his supporting cast helped him develop.

The Cavaliers had their best drive of the second half, but linebacker Wade Woodaz ruined it with a diving strip sack that was saved by defensive tackle Tré Williams. It was Virginia’s first turnover of the game

Williams ran a jet sweep to the right for a 36-yard touchdown, beating past the Virginia defenders. The wide receiver already has a passing touchdown and needs a receiving score to complete a hat trick.

Aided by a defense that forced four straight punts, including three three-and-outs, Clemson scored 28 unanswered points.

Clemson managed an 11-play, 90-yard drive after halftime to extend its lead. Klubnik found wide receiver TJ Moore for 17 yards and wide receiver Antonio Williams for 34 yards to set up tight end Olsen Patt-Henry’s 11-yard touchdown reception.

This was Klubnik’s first touchdown pass of the game and Clemson scored 21 unanswered points.

Clemson wide receiver Antonio Williams hit a 34-yard pass to wide receiver Troy Stellato, bringing the Tigers into the five-yard zone. Running back Phil Mafah rushed for a 3-yard score, giving Clemson the lead again.

Williams completed a touchdown pass to Jake Briningstool against Wake Forest last week. Williams is 2-for-2 this season with 62 yards passing and one touchdown

Despite falling out of rhythm, Clemson responded to losing the ball on its final drive and tied the game against Virginia.

Quarterback Cade Klubnik missed tight end Jake Briningstool for an open touchdown, but the team relied on Mafah, who gained 25 yards rushing, to get the ball going. Mafah hit a 1-yard touchdown to give the Tigers life.

After Kam Robinson’s interception, Virginia scored an 8-yard touchdown to take the lead. Virginia quarterback Anthony Colandrea rushed for 20 yards on a third-and-17, which helped set up the score for Dakota Twitty.

This is the first time Clemson has fallen behind at home this season.

On the final play of the first quarter, Klubnik resembled his 2023 self and threw a terrible interception to Virginia’s Kam Robinson.

Robinson appeared to rush, but then dropped into coverage to intercept the pass and return it for eight yards. Virginia starts the second quarter with excellent field position.

Virginia evened the score with a 14-play, 80-yard drive. Clemson committed three penalties (illegal substitution, offside and facemask) on the drive for 22 yards, which helped the Cavaliers down.

However, Clemson couldn’t get a break to allow a touchdown and instead forced a field goal.

Clemson’s first drive full of big plays ended with just three points. Quarterback Cade Klubnik completed passes for 22 and 31 yards, but a touchdown drop by the freshman wide receiver and a disallowed man-down field penalty on a scoring pass wiped out the first drive.

Freshman kicker Nolan Hauser converted a 29-yard field goal, continuing his impressive season.

Virginia will start with the ball in coach Tony Elliott’s first game against Clemson since he became coach of the Cavaliers. He played wide receiver for Clemson for four seasons and was an assistant with the Tigers for 11 years.
