What you need to know about youth vaping

SALT LAKE CITY – The use of electronic cigarettes has increased significantly among young people in the United States since their release.

A Utah State University expert said that although the devices are marketed as a safer alternative to cigarettes, they still pose a significant health risk to young people.

These substances can cause lung damage, increase the risk of heart disease and lead to conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and popcorn lung,” said Dr. Ashley Yaugher. “Mental health effects include increased anxiety, mood swings, and withdrawal from social and academic activities.”

E-cigarettes pose a health risk to anyone who uses them, but especially to teenagers, Yaugher said. And it can be difficult to tell when a child is vaping because the devices are usually small and can be easily hidden.

But it’s not just the harmful chemicals that can harm you. Yaugher said young people who vape are seven times more likely to start using cigarettes.

“Parents and guardians should be aware of the signs that their child may be vaping. These include anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, unexplained weight changes and the sudden presence of sweet smells, chargers or unrecognizable devices,” said Yaugher.

She said there are things caregivers can do if they suspect their child is using e-cigarettes and to prevent them from starting.

“Open, honest communication is key, along with establishing clear household rules around tobacco use,” Yaugher said.

She also said that if your child is already using e-cigarettes, you should be careful to voice your concerns, be supportive and seek professional help if needed.

“Make it clear to them that there are immediate benefits for those who quit vaping, most of all youth WHO vape I want to stop,” Yaugher said.
