Christian Bale’s legendary horror film is getting a reboot

American Psycho, the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, is getting a new film adaptation.

Set in the 1980s, the horror is about an investment banker working on Wall Street who is secretly a serial killer. The film is known for both its violence and its satirical take on yuppie culture and was previously adapted in 2000, with Christian Bale playing the lead role of Patrick Bateman.

Now Deadline reports that studio Lionsgate is planning a new film adaptation of the book and Luca Guadagnino is in final negotiations to direct the project.

Guadagnino is no stranger to films with homoerotic undertones, having previously directed this year’s steamy tennis hit “Challengers.” He has also directed explicitly gay material in “Call Me By Your Name” and the upcoming film “Queer.”

In the latter film, James Bond and Knives Out’s Daniel Craig plays an expat who tries to ease his pain through casual sex and drugs and ends up obsessed with a younger man.

Before its release, critics were able to see and review the film at the Venice Film Festival. In the reviews published so far, the performances of the two main actors Craig and Drew Starkey have been described as outstanding, while the detour into the jungle in the third act of the story was quite controversial.

Craig recently explained how he came to become involved in queer advocacy, recalling: “We [Guadagnino and I] I met 20 years ago and said, “Hey, we want to work together,” and we ended up doing that.

“If I wasn’t in this movie and had seen this movie, I would love to be in it. It’s the kind of movie I want to see.” [and] do – I want it to be out there.
