Will Lionel Messi play for Inter Miami against New England Revolution in the MLS tonight?

The Herons can break the MLS record of 73 points in their final game of the regular season.

Inter Miami is aiming for a new record in the MLS. With just one regular season game, they can break the highest point total in the MLS. The record is 73 points and was set by the New England Revolution, who the Herons will play next.

Inter Miami has 71 points in the Eastern Conference table. With just one win, they could reach 74 points, breaking the New England Revolution’s record against them. The opposing team will certainly be motivated enough not to let this happen so easily.

However, Caleb Porter’s team is 40 points behind Inter Miami. Based on this data alone, you can blindly guess how poorly they are performing. New England hasn’t even managed to score the same number of points as the number of games played.

The team played 33 games but only scored 31 points.

Will Lionel Messi play against New England?

In short, more than likely. Lionel Messi, like many other footballers, was on international duty during this October break. Messi had a stunning breakthrough when he scored his 10th international hat-trick for Argentina against Bolivia. It helped him draw level with Cristiano Ronaldo, who also happens to have the record 10 international hat-tricks.

Nevertheless, Leo also helped his national team with two more assists. The Inter Miami coach has many things to consider before starting Messi in his final MLS game of the regular season. Next they have to worry about the playoffs.

The Argentine star is no longer a teenager or early 20s to play day in and day out. He is 37 years old. With Inter Miami already a No. 1 seed in the MLS Cup playoffs, the chances of tiring Messi more by putting him in the starting lineup are very slim.

Although the Herons will certainly be aiming to break the 73-point record, but not at the expense of their key player. New England Revolution are already doing poorly. They are on a streak of three straight losses, including a 4-0 defeat in their last game against Columbus Crew.

Inter Miami coach Tata Martino is likely to use Messi as a substitute. Martino said this recently: “Obviously our main focus is the other Friday (the playoff game). … We are also analyzing what participation we can enable the players who came from the national team, including Leo. He’s more likely to start from the bench because he’s obviously traveled and played.”
