Tuchel’s hiring by England is causing consternation and resignation among British football coaches

LONDON (AP) — British soccer managers reacted with disappointment and some resignation Thursday after a German, Thomas Tuchel, was hired to coach England ahead of a homegrown coach.

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said a number of English managers – he did not give the exact number – had been interviewed for the role from a shortlist of “around” 10 names. Tuchel was ultimately seen as the best hope of leading England to their first major title since the 1966 World Cup.

Tuchel, the former coach of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, is the third foreign coach – after the late Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson (2001-06) and Italy’s Fabio Capello (2007-12) – to be appointed leader the English men’s team in this century.

Russell Martin, one of six managers from Britain and Ireland currently managing teams in the Premier League, said there are “plenty of English coaches who are really capable of doing this job.”

“Maybe the English managers aren’t given enough credit,” said the Southampton manager, “or maybe they’re not seen as good enough by the key people.”

Martin, who got his chance in the Premier League after winning promotion with Southampton last season, questioned the effectiveness of the much-touted coaching career at England’s national training center at St George’s Park.

“It will generate a lot of interesting discussions and conversations, particularly at the FA, because we have a renowned coaching education system where people come from all over and then we can’t appoint anyone from there,” said Martin, an England-born former Scotland international .

Everton’s England coach Sean Dyche, who confirmed he was not interviewed by the FA, said this was “a reality of modern football” after homegrown coaches were left out of consideration for the job.

And Leicester coach Steve Cooper, a Welshman who led England to the Under-17 World Cup title in 2017, said he hoped British coaches would become among the best in the world “over time”.

“In the meantime we have to take every opportunity that comes our way and do a good job,” said Cooper, who has also coached Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. “Until we do this regularly, maybe we shouldn’t say so much.

“I really believe in British culture. I also believe in coaching education.”
