CCSD trustees file complaint alleging three board officials violated assembly laws

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford may potentially take on CCSD Board President Evenly Garcia-Morales, board counsel Nicole Malich and an unidentified trustee after he was accused of violating assembly laws.

“It is a violation of Nevada Revised Statutes to discuss any item that could be on the board’s agenda that could be discussed in closed session,” said Trustee Isaac Barrón, who filed the complaint.

Barrón said he filed the complaint against the three people nearly three weeks ago after he said they tried to discuss former trustee Katie Williams’ job behind closed doors.

“Chairwoman Evelyn Garcia-Morales and board advisor Nicole Malich then discussed the appointments to various committees that should be discussed in an open session and then came to a very important topic, namely the appointment of the successor [of] Trustee B. At that point they had already crossed the line,” Barrón said.

Barrón and other trustees have been urging Garcia-Morales for weeks to discuss the CCSD budget and Williams’ vacancy.

Although both topics were discussed in a recent board meeting, it was not without a heated debate between Barrón and Garcia-Morales.

During a meeting on September 26, both trustees got into a heated debate about the CCSD budget.

From the meeting on September 26th

Garcia Morales: “Are you going to continue interrupting the meeting?

Barron: “I request an appeal.”

Garcia Morales: “Trustee Barrón, how about we take a break.”

Barron: “No, I think we should discuss this in a public meeting.”

Barrón said he has not received an update from the attorney general’s office since the complaint was filed. He added that there are still some unanswered questions surrounding former trustee Williams.

“We are asking the CEO questions about when she learned Katie Williams did not live in our state. Why she didn’t do anything,” Barrón said.

Channel 13 also spoke with some constituents about the complaint filed.

One woman said she would also like to know more about the budget issues, the vacancy and the complaint.

“I am deeply disturbed by what is going on,” said one voter. “There’s a lot going on with this board that I’m not particularly happy with.

Channel 13 has reached out to the individuals named in the complaint. We are still waiting for an answer.
