First reviews & reactions to Gladiator 2

Of utmost importance

The first major public screening of Ridley Scotts took place at New York Comic-Con 2024 Gladiator 2 ahead of its release on November 22nd. Following this screening, the first reviews and reactions were published on X (formerly Twitter).

Journalist Scott Mantz called in all caps Gladiator 2 “the REAL OFFER” describe it as “An epic sequel worthy of its Oscar-winning predecessor:”

“’GLADIATOR II’ is indeed a real bargain! An epic sequel worthy of its Oscar-winning predecessor – great action, amazing visual effects, outstanding performances across the board (especially PAUL MESCAL & DENZEL WASHINGTON)! A return to form for the director.” RIDLEY SCOTT! I was ENTERTAINED!”

Critic Scott Menzel similarly praised the sequel, comparing it to Scott’s previous films, claiming it was his “Best film since then The Martian.” He also praised stars Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington in his review:

“‘Gladiator II’ is Ridley Scott’s best film since ‘The Martian.'” A big, bloody, hard-hitting action spectacle that builds on the legacy of the original and features many epic battles. Denzel Washington really shines here. He had the time of his life here.”

When asked about Joseph Quinn’s role in the film, Menzel had nothing but positive comments about the star of the upcoming film The Fantastic Four: Getting Started:

“He is very good! He’ll be around for a long time.”

Not all comments too Gladiator 2 However, it was first class, as Abe Friedtanzer described it “A decent but unnecessary sequel.” Those were the best moments for him “musical callbacks to the original:”

“’Gladiator 2′ is a decent but unnecessary sequel full of big speeches and big-budget fight sequences. The best moments are musical throwbacks to the original. Paul Mescal has solid fighting energy, but the standout performers are Joseph Quinn and Denzel. “Washington.”

Offscreen Central’s Jillian Chilenerian jumped back on the worship bandwagon and described Gladiator 2 as “An absolute triumph” while also praising Scott for giving viewers something “something so deliciously cinematic and Machiavellian:”

“’GLADIATOR 2′ is an absolute triumph. Ridley Scott puts you in the action of the arena where legacy and honor are at stake, pumping up the blood, fights and biceps for something so deliciously cinematic and Machiavellian. Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal and Joseph Quinn certified movie stars.”

Chilenerian later urged Oscar voters to do the same “Engrave Denzel Washington’s Name” included in the Best Supporting Actor trophy as soon as possible:

“In this case, put Denzel Washington’s name in the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for ‘GLADIATOR 2.'”

Chilenerian’s commentary also featured Pedro Pascal, who had a huge positive influence on her viewing experience:

“Pedro Pascal as the Roman general in Gladiator 2 really resonated with me.”

According to Matthew Koss, editor of Awards Focus, Gladiator 2 is what emerges “When Ridley Scott lets go and finds heart in the action” in his work:

“’Gladiator 2′ is what happens when Ridley Scott lets loose and finds heart in the action. An absolute spectacle with a pulsating pace. I can’t wait to see it again.”
