What is heaven like?

Then the angel showed me a river of crystal clear water of life flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb. It flowed down the middle of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life that bore twelve fruits and brought in a new harvest every month. The leaves were used as medicine to heal the nations. There will no longer be a curse on anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there, no need for lamps or sun, for the Lord God will shine upon them. And they will reign forever and ever. (Revelation 22:1-5 NLT)

I love talking about heaven. I love thinking deeply about heaven. Why? It is my future goal as a Christian – and it is yours too if you have accepted Christ. What will we see when we get to heaven? What are we going to do there? The Bible offers us some tantalizing insights, but that’s all it is: insights.

It reminds me of when I’m in a cinema and they’re showing trailers for new films. I remember a movie that I was really looking forward to because the trailer was great. And then I saw the film. Guess what? The trailer was better.

By heaven we don’t have to worry about that. The Bible says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9 NLT).

God blesses us with little glimpses of glory – special moments when you are with family or friends or watching a spectacular sunset, sunrise or rainbow. If you ever get tired of a rainbow, there might be something wrong with you!

All these beautiful things are God’s creation. And they remind us that something bigger is coming. Heaven is not a watered down version of the most beautiful moments on earth. The greatest moments on earth are a foretaste of even greater things to come. In heaven your greatest dreams will come true and more.

Heaven is a place of celebration and community. A place of activities and worship. A place full of fun and celebration that puts the suffering of the world into context.

Will you be there? We decide in this life where we will spend the afterlife. Are you absolutely sure that you will go to heaven when you die? Remember: You don’t go to heaven to find Christ. You go to Christ to find heaven. Through Jesus – and only through Jesus – we will go to heaven.
