Amari Cooper will play in Week 7; Latest Bills Tracking Information

Davante Adams was dealt to the Jets earlier this week, but that AFC East wideout acquisition was soon followed by landing the Bills Amari Cooper. Further details have become known about the latter exchange.

Buffalo was one of several suitors for Adams, who was the top trade target among receivers. The price of adding the three-time All-Pro was determined in large part by Vega’s desire not to retain any portion of his salary. That ended up being the case, prompting the Bills to seriously pursue a deal.

“My stomach was [the Raiders] were never interested in eating money, which they didn’t do,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane confirmed when discussing Adams’ trade market (via Ryan O’Halloran of the Buffalo News). “If they were interested, they probably could have gotten more from us or someone else.”

Since the Bills were never really a contender to acquire Adams, attention turned to Cooper. As Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer notes, Beane and Co. have been in contact with the Browns before further talks about a trade took place on Monday (video link). That agreement (which called for Buffalo to get Cooper and a sixth-round pick this year for a third-rounder and a seventh-round pick in 2026) was worked out a day later, a sign of how smoothly negotiations went.

Cooper indicated that he did not expect a deal, and Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports notes that the Browns did not actively shop him before the deal (video link). Rather, it was Buffalo’s “very aggressive” efforts to sign Cooper that made the deal happen. In fact, James Palmer of Underdog Fantasy notes that the Browns fetched a higher trade price than they expected. However, he adds that Cleveland has now seen that the five-time Pro Bowler has lived up to the team’s standards in the first part of the season.

Cooper’s 41.7 yards per game in 2024 is the lowest mark of his career, a result of the Browns’ struggling offense but also a possible sign of decline. Still, the 30-year-old is expected to handle a heavy workload early in his tenure in Buffalo given the Bills’ offense’s lack of experienced pass-catchers. After the team traded away Stefon Diggs and allowed Gabe Davis Heading into free agency, Cooper has the potential to earn a significant target share with his newest team. It will take some time to get used to the Bills’ playbook, but there’s no wait expected.

Head coach Sean McDermott said (via Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic) that he expects Cooper to start against the Titans on Sunday. A full workload days after being assigned may not be realistic, but he will be able to contribute immediately to a team that is once again trying to assert itself among the AFC contenders.
