Get a comprehensive look at BYU Football’s 1984 National Championship season.

The Cougars endured arguably their most frustrating half of the season, trailing 21-14 after committing three turnovers and allowing Ollie Gordon to run for more than 10 yards per touch.

There will be plenty of drama along the way. Oklahoma State quarterback Garret Rangel was ejected from the game due to injury, and BYU’s Jake Retzlaff appeared to be injured on the final play before halftime, with his status for the remainder of the evening still unclear.

The Cowboys get the kickoff to the second half as the Cougars look to overcome the deficit and keep their unbeaten streak alive.

Second quarter

Oklahoma State 21, BYU 14

0:00 – Jake Retzlaff ends the first half with his second interception of the night. Oklahoma State 21, BYU 14.

Retzlaff appeared to be nursing his shoulder after attempting a tackle on the interception return, which caused some drama for the Cougars in the final 30 minutes of the game.

0:32 — It’s a hat trick for Ollie Gordon.

Gordon ran into the end zone for the third time tonight and gave the Cowboys the lead for the first time all night. Oklahoma State 21, BYU 14.

It’s not all good news for the Cowboys, however. Quarterback Garret Rangel – who has already rushed for 77 yards tonight – left the game with an apparent shoulder injury and was replaced under center by recently benched veteran Alan Bowman.

3:44 — Jake Retzlaff’s first mistake of the night came at just the wrong time.

Retzlaff’s throw down the sideline attempted to force some downfield but was intercepted by Korie Black, who returned the pick 17 yards to the Oklahoma State 24-yard line. BYU 14, Oklahoma State 14.

Retzlaff has now thrown six interceptions this season.

7:55 – The Cougars simply have no answer for Ollie Gordon.

Oklahoma State’s talented running back intercepted a pass in the flat with no coverage and sprinted up the sideline, overcoming BYU safety Faletau Satuala before reaching the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. BYU 14, Oklahoma State 14.

Gordon has now scored seven career touchdowns against the Cougars in less than two games.

2:03 p.m – Tanner Wall’s pick-six attempt may have failed, but LJ Martin finished the job with a 1-yard touchdown to give the Cougars a one-point lead. BYU 14, Oklahoma State 7.

2:05 p.m – Another week, another interception for Tanner Wall.

BYU’s free safety intercepted a bad pass from Garret Rangel and returned it 47 yards to the goal line, nearly earning a pick-six but still giving the Cougars huge momentum. BYU 7, Oklahoma State 7.

Wall now has interceptions in consecutive weeks and picked up his first career pick last Saturday against Arizona.

First quarter

BYU 7, Oklahoma State 7

0:00 — The Cougars’ bag of tricks backfired on them.

Hinckley Ropati took a throw and attempted a halfback pass, but offered a poor throw that was intercepted by Parker Robertson. BYU 7, Oklahoma State 7.

The Cowboys will now open the second quarter and take over at their own 20-yard line.

9:42 – Ollie Gordon ran for 166 yards and five touchdowns against BYU last season, and he’s wasting no time in his current attempt to torment the Cougars.

The Doak Walker Award candidate broke free on the Cowboys’ first possession with a 50-yard run into the end zone and finished the game with seven points each. BYU 7, Oklahoma State 0.

Gordon’s run marked the longest play allowed by the BYU defense all season.

11:57 – BYU stormed right out of the gate.

Jake Retzlaff gave the Cougars an early lead on their first possession, rushing for a 4-yard touchdown to cap a six-play, 75-yard drive. BYU 7, Oklahoma State 0.

BYU gained 50 yards on the first play of the game thanks to a deep shot from Retzlaff to Darius Lassiter, who broke double coverage, made a diving jump and immediately brought the Cougars to the edge of the red zone.
