Google receives temporary relief in lawsuit against Epic Games, Play Store remains closed to competitors for now – Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)

A federal judge in California agreed Alphabet Inc.s GOOG GOOGL Application for a temporary stay pursuant to a court order requiring a revision of its regulations Play Store.

What happened: On Friday, US District Judge James Donato gave the green light to Google’s request to delay its corporate restructuring Android App Store, Reuters reported.

The original Oct. 7 order was the result of an antitrust lawsuit filed by Epic gamesthe company behind “Fortnite”.

However, the judge rejected Google’s request to stay the order throughout the rest of the appeal period in the case.

The delay allows the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to consider Google’s separate appeal to stay the judge’s order.

Google welcomed the ruling and expressed satisfaction with the decision to temporarily stop implementing “dangerous mitigations requested by Epic.”

Epic Games dismissed the ruling as a procedural move and accused Google of exploiting “fear mongering and unfounded security threats” to maintain control of Android devices, the report said.

Why it matters: Epic Games’ lawsuit led to a jury verdict last year that Google illegally monopolized the way consumers download apps on Android devices and how they pay for in-app transactions.

Google has already appealed these antitrust findings to the 9th Circuit.

Previously, Google claimed that the injunction would pose “serious security and privacy risks” to the Android ecosystem.

The tech giant also argued that it cannot be classified as a monopolist because Play Store competes directly with it Apple’s App Store.
