Live review of the preliminary rounds from day 2

World Water Swimming Championships 2024 – Shanghai

Day 2 Preliminary Heat Sheets

After an exciting first day that saw numerous national and World Cup records set, we are back for another day of short course meter racing in Shanghai.

There will also be a star-studded line-up today, with numerous Olympic gold medalists and world record holders (in both the SCM and LCM) taking part in the nine events this morning.

The preliminary session should be viewable by most fans on the World Aquatics Recast page (for a fee), which can be accessed below. Further information can be found here.

  • World record: 22.11 – Kliment Kolesnikov, RUS (2022)

Top 8:

  1. Isaac Cooper (AUS) – 22.58

It didn’t take long for a record like Australia’s to go down Isaac Cooper clocked a time of 22.58, breaking a 14-year-old World Cup record. This record was set by Peter Marshall from the USA in 2009.

Cooper was actually a little off his best time, a time of 22.52 that he had set for two years, when he set the junior world record. So look for him to be faster in the finale tonight.

Reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 100m backstroke Xu Jiayu qualified second with 23.07, closely followed by Switzerland Theyry Bollin on September 23rd

South Africa Pieter Coetze tied with Kacper Stokowski for the 4th this morning, with both swimmers on 23/14. Coetze will be the only swimmer from yesterday’s 200m backstroke final who also swam the shortest backstroke at this stop.

World record holder Siobhan Haughey (HKG) set the second fastest time of the morning with 1:57.36, while China achieved the second fastest time of the morning Yagi Kong was the only other woman under two minutes with a time of 1:58.86.
