Football is neglected in the 29:17 defeat at Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown football team fell by a score of 29-17 in a Friday night showdown at Princeton on ESPNU.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Five turnovers doomed the Bears, all of which ended up in Princeton territory, while the Browns defense had two takeaways.
  • Brown rushed for 172 yards in the game, while Princeton had 179 yards. The Bears had a 443-379 edge in total offense.
  • The defense played a strong second half, holding the Tigers to just 47 yards on the ground and 113 total yards in the final 30 minutes.
  • Seniors Tim Malo And Caleb Moorhead had 7.0 tackles apiece to lead the Brown defense.
  • senior Isaiah Reed had 6.0 tackles (four solo) and a crucial interception in the end zone.
  • Sami Miller had his first career interception.
  • Kevin Coss had 1.5 sacks while Kyle Philbin, Owen Clarke, Winston Jordan and Reed also added sacks.
  • Ten different Bears had a reception, the second straight game in which players in double figures had a catch.
  • Ben Moseley And Levi Linowes each had three catches for a career-high 42 yards.
  • quarterback Jake Willcox led the Bears with 55 yards on the ground. He had a 31-for-50 passing performance for 271 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers jumped down the field on their first possession, attempted a 4th-and-1 from their own 34 yards and turned it into a 66-yard touchdown run up the middle by John Volker. The PAT was not good after a penalty.
  • After a punt from Brown, Princeton capped an 11-play, 90-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown from Volker to take a 12-0 lead after a failed two-point attempt at 5:16.
  • After both teams traded interceptions early in the second quarter, Princeton took a 19-0 lead after a 13-yard QB scramble on third down at 12:27.
  • The Bears responded with a big 10-play, 75-yard drive to get on the scoreboard Solomon Miller He took a pitch to left and let it go untouched from three feet away to make the score 19-7 at 8:39. The drive was highlighted by a 31-yard pass to culminate Levi Linoweswhich put Brown in position at the two-yard line.
  • Princeton used a 60-yard pass to get into field goal range and took three more with a 28-yarder with 7:00 left in the half.
  • Princeton escaped with an interception in the red zone in the final seconds, Brown’s third turnover of the first half, making the score 22-7 heading into the locker room.
  • Brown got right back into the game with a strong 18-play, 75-yard drive to open the second half, capped by a 1-yard scoring run Qwentin Brown. The Bears converted six first downs on the drive and were 4-for-5 on third down and 1-1 on fourth down.
  • Reed, with his back to the goal line and facing 2nd-and-goal, made a huge interception in the end zone to end a long Princeton drive and win the ball back from Brown 13 minutes before the end.
  • Maron brought the Bears within 22-17 with a 33-yard field goal with 8:17 left. Brown converted a huge fourth down on the drive with a 31-yard pass to Moseley on 4th-and-5 from his own 49 yards.
  • Qwentin Brown came up with a huge punt block on special teams with 7:17 left to get the ball back from Brown near midfield, but the Tigers forced Brown’s fourth turnover of the game with a fumble a few plays later.
  • Princeton drove down the field and finished the game with a 12-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 left.

Brown will return home for two straight games against Cornell starting next Saturday, Oct. 26, with a noon opener on ESPN+.
