Men’s tennis celebrates success at the ITA Texas Regionals in Waco

WACO, Texas – The UT Arlington men’s tennis team had a successful start to the ITA Texas Regionals, picking up some big wins in doubles and singles over the first two days at the Hurd Tennis Center on Baylor’s campus.

Yazid Lahjomri defeated Nicolas Trebuchet of Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 6:4, 6:2 and advanced to the round of 32 in the main draw. Pedro Sasso Imran defeated Daniel Abdul Hazli from Baylor 7:6 (7:4) and 6:4 and thus moved into the second round of the main round together with Lahjomri.

All three doubles teams put together by the Mavericks reached the round of 32 in the main draw.

The team of Lahjomri and Sasso defeated Calvin Wang and Rahul Sachdev of Texas 8-4. Daniel Pérez-Caraballo and Ian Uraga defeated the team of Nicolas Niox Chateau and Matthieu Coignet with a final score of 8-6. Andres Medus And Meet Barot defeated Sam Whitehead and Ivo Isqueiro of UTRGV 8-4. The doubleheader continues on Saturday, October 19th at 9:00 a.m. CT.

In the singles of the main round, Barot lost 0:6, 3:6 to Giulio Perego from Texas A&M. Medus lost to Baylor’s Quintan Van Wijk in a hard-fought game 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-7 (4-7) to end the second day.

On the first day, Thursday, October 17, four of the six participating student-athletes punched their ticket to the regional championship main draw.

Sasso defeated Alexandre Chauvel Gobin of Incarnate Word 6-3, 6-0. Sasso would then defeat Matheus Lima of Abilene Christian 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Uraga defeated Rafael Candelas Ruiz of Incarnate Word 6-4, 6-2. He then faced Sam Whitehead of UTRGV and lost to him 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.

Lahjomri lost to Ethan Scribner of Abilene Christian in a hard-fought match by a score of 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 1-6.

Pérez-Caraballo took a 1-1 lead on the day and lost 6-2, 6-1 to Brody Nejedly of Texas Tech in his first action of the day. At the end of his day, he defeated Ethan Boswell of Prairie View A&M 6-4, 6-2.

Barot defeated Baylor’s Luis Jose Nakamine 6-3, 6-3 in his only action of the day.
