Tam secures first place for the field hockey playoffs

Senior Rowie Scobie scored five goals Thursday as Tam secured the MCAL regular-season field hockey title with a 12-0 victory over Marin Academy. Senior Alya Duggan had two goals and three assists in the Red-tailed Hawks’ final game of the regular season. Stela King, Veronica Ray, Dola Tibbs, Ali Jampol and Lucy Mollner also scored for Tam.

Tam (13-2-1) sits atop the MCAL standings with 41 points. Second-place University (11-1-2) can finish with a maximum of 40 points with two games remaining. Third-ranked Redwood (10-2-2) has a chance to clinch second place with two games left.

  • Lucy Jeffers scored two goals and added an assist in Redwood’s 4-0 win over Convent on Thursday. Lucy Tonderys and Mackenzie Wilkinson also scored for the Giants.

Girls tennis

Terra Linda collected two key singles victories and a doubles victory, defeating Archie Williams High 4-3 on Thursday in a crucial battle for the final spot in the MCAL playoffs. Mimi Kemp of the Trojans edged Kathleen Schalit of the Peregrine Falcons for a 4-6, 6-2 (10-8) win in fourth-place singles. Chloe Sason gave the Trojans a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, and Terra Linda won the No. 1 singles match by default. The Falcons’ Siena Mickelson earned a 7-5, 7-5 victory in No. 2 singles over Jamie Schmidt.

Terra Linda’s top doubles team of Leona Liskey and Sahaj Malik battled to a 6-1, 7-5 victory over the Falcons’ Sarah Chamberlin and Chloe Dupont.

Terra Linda (5-9) is in fifth place with two games remaining while Archie Williams (4-9) is in sixth place with three games remaining, meaning both teams could finish the regular season at 7-9 . If necessary, a play-in game is scheduled for October 25th.

Water polo for boys

Tam was invited to the prestigious invitational tournament, the annual North-South tournament, and lost two games to top-tier Southern California competition on Friday.

In the tournament opener at Gunn High in Palo Alto, undefeated Newport Harbor (23-0), the top-ranked team in the country according to MaxPreps, defeated Tam 14-1. Senior Fields Palmer scored Tam’s only goal and Reed Hanna had four steals.

In a consolation game, freshman goaltender Ethan Wallace made 11 saves, but Mater Dei of Santa Ana repelled a spirited attempt by Tam 8-6. Hanna scored three goals and freshman Jasper Feldman scored two for the Red-tailed Hawks (10-9).

Tam plays Greenwich (Ct) on Saturday morning at the Gunn.

Water polo for girls

Tam defeated San Domenico 10-2, although the Panthers got goals from Lauren Kurtzman and Kayla Li.

Girls volleyball

Novato resident Claire Ellis, a sophomore at St. Vincent De Paul in Petaluma, has emerged as the team’s kill leader this season.

Ellis missed her freshman season due to a torn ACL but is enjoying a breakout season with 213 kills for the Mustangs (19-6). Ellis is also third on the team in aces (67) and fifth in digs (80).

The Mustangs, who are 6-2 with two games left in the North Bay Redwood League, have only played one Marin team so far this season. Ellis posted a team-best nine kills in a three-set win over San Domenico on September 28.
