‘It was devastating for me’: Video voyeurism victim speaks out after lawsuit filed against Royal Caribbean – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

COCONUT GROVE, FL. (WSVN) – A victim of video voyeurism is speaking out after her lawyers filed a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean.

The lawsuit centers on a former crew member who was caught installing hidden cameras in rooms to spy on guests.

One of those guests spoke to 7News in late January about her trip on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas. She said she found out from the employee’s recordings that she was one of the victims.

“Emotionally you feel unsafe,” the victim told 7News in a phone call Friday. She would like to remain anonymous.

The victim said it was supposed to be a relaxing cruise, but she left the trip stressed and anxious.

“Knowing that anyone, anywhere could have one of these cameras, it’s very hard to see the reality of this crime out there, this crime of voyeurism,” the victim said.

Prosecutors said former Royal Caribbean employee Arvin Joseph Mirasol planted hidden cameras throughout the cabin. The employee was arrested earlier this year.

The victim said what was supposed to be a peaceful family vacation left her devastated.

“It was devastating for me to learn that someone had invaded my privacy in this way,” she said.

She said she had no idea the camera had been hidden in her cabin during the cruise.

Months later, when Mirasol was arrested, police officers approached her to show her pictures of herself taken on the former employee’s camera.

“I really lost it because [it happened] during your most intimate moments there on a cruise ship,” the victim said. “I was with my husband, we had only gotten married about a year and a few months ago, and knowing that my privacy and our marriage had been violated was very difficult.”

The victim and her attorney said they want Royal Caribbean to take responsibility and prevent this from ever happening to another passenger again.

“If we hold these airlines, these cruise lines, Royal Caribbean, accountable for situations like this, they can now proactively track down this misconduct and these people, these individuals who can commit these acts against their passengers before it even happens,” said Attorney Bernardo Pimentel.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean said:

“The safety and privacy of our guests is our top priority and we will not tolerate this behavior. We immediately reported this matter to law enforcement and terminated the crew member. “

Officials said a search of Mirasol’s camera found numerous videos of children ages 2 to 17. They said Mirasol had installed cameras in passenger cabins since December 2023.

Mirasol was sentenced in August to 30 years in federal prison.
