Red Wolves fall in threes on Friday in the state of Texas

SAN MARCOS, Texas (10/18/24) – Arkansas State volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision (23-25, 171-25, 25-20) to Texas State on Friday night to open a two-game series at Strahan Arena.

A-State (15-4, 5-2 SBC) hit .243 as a squad, but the Bobcats (11-7, 5-2) countered with eight service aces at a .291 clip. Three Texas State attackers recorded double-digit kills, led by Samantha Wunsch with twelve.

Grace Wiley led the Scarlet and Black with 10 kills while Addison Collum Hit .636 with seven kills on 11 clean swings. Daedrianna Cail tallied five blocks, with Collum accounting for four in the match.

The game began with a back-and-forth first set, but the Red Wolves became the first team to score 20 points with back-to-back aces Sarah Martinezwho made a game-high 19 digs to make it 20-18. Texas State responded with a 4-0 run to regain a 23-21 lead. After the hosts had a lead of 24:22, Kaitlin Whitlock kept the frame alive with a kill, but Bailey Hanner secured the set for Texas State with one of her 10 kills.

Texas State used a three-point shot early in the second set to take a 13-9 lead and extended it to as many as six points on an ace from Alyssa Ortega. A-State got within three points but couldn’t overcome the deficit as the Bobcats won 25-17 to take a two-set lead in the contest.

A-State rallied to open the third set 10-6 before Texas State took a 9-1 lead at 15-11. The Bobcats’ lead grew to four, but the Red Wolves fought back and cut the lead in half to 21-19. Texas State won four of the last five points of the game to secure the victory.

Arkansas State looks to bounce back Saturday afternoon against the Bobcats. First serve at Strahan Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN Plus.
