Next up on CBS was the second week of the legal dramedy Matlockstarring Kathy Bates, from which was built Ghosts by 810,000 viewers, including 6.38 million at 9 p.m. ET. In comparison, this is a significant improvement over the previous user So help me, Todd. It’s also a rare example of a scripted drama building off a scripted comedy at 9 p.m. ET.

The second season of the also legal CBS dramedy begins at 10 p.m Elsbeth won the hour in total viewers with 4.76 million. Both Matlock And Elsbeth also led their time periods demographically.

CBS’ Thursday night win is particularly impressive given strong competition from two Major League Baseball playoff games (featuring three of four teams from the New York and Los Angeles markets) as well as Thursday Night Football.

Competitive…

-ABC showed dramas 9-1-1the recently introduced Doctor Odyssey and veteran Grey’s Anatomywhich did not benefit from the move to the 10 p.m. ET Thursday hour.

-NBC’s law and order And Law & Order: SVU show their age while Found by 10 p.m. the audience has practically lost.

-Fox’s unscripted food-themed duo – Hell’s Kitchen And Crime scene kitchen – couldn’t keep up.

-The CW’s Game Show Strategy – Scrabble And Trivial pursuit – doesn’t resonate.

The bottom line: CBS is the channel to beat on Thursdays this season (among other nights).
