(Bloomberg) — The London Stock Exchange Group Plc has terminated an employee after investigating a “disturbing video” in which he followed a black teenager around his Florida neighborhood, his mother said.

The company terminated Stephen Carega after he was identified in a video in which he and his neighbors followed a black teenager as he walked through his neighborhood, according to a person familiar with the matter.

“The individual involved was initially suspended while we investigated the matter,” an LSEG spokesman said in a statement that did not name Carega. “The investigation is now complete and the individual’s employment has been terminated.”

Carega did not respond to emails or a text message seeking comment. Several calls to numbers registered to him did not go through.

A Florida woman posted a series of videos this week that she said were taken by her son as he walked through her neighborhood after Hurricane Milton left her home without power.

In the videos, several men follow their son and repeatedly ask him what he is doing in a so-called closed neighborhood and, among other things, call him “loser.” One complained about his wife’s treatment of the teenager.

One of the videos has been viewed more than 5 million times on TikTok. Many viewers said the encounter evoked images of the American South during the Jim Crow era. There were numerous comments on LSEG’s social media pages calling on the company to take action against Carega.

“We expect the behavior of our employees to meet a high standard,” the company said in a statement. “LSEG has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of racism, discrimination, prejudice or harassment.”
