Oakland Hills Fire: Video shows a five-alarm brush fire destroying homes 33 years after the 1991 firestorm

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — Nearly 33 years after the deadly Oakland Hills firestorm, a vegetation fire broke out in the Oakland Hills Friday afternoon, damaging two homes and forcing 500 residents to evacuate.

The fire broke out near the intersection of Mountain Boulevard and Keller Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

The video shows the intense moments as the fire spread quickly near I-580 and burned close to homes.

Fire retardant was dropped from California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection aircraft.

According to fire officials, progress came to a halt after 10 hectares burned.

This fire occurred nearly 33 years after the deadly Oakland Hills firestorm.

On October 19, 1991, the Tunnel Fire ravaged the Oakland Hills, killing 25 people and destroying nearly 3,500 homes.
