Lopes heads to the 2nd MPSF Open Water Championship event

The Grand Canyon swimming team is sending ten student-athletes to the second annual MPSF Open Water Championships in Long Beach, California on Saturday.

For men, the GCUs Atu Ambala, Colin Campbell, Easton Mousser, Batu Servi And Joe Stephenson in the 5-kilometer race at 9 a.m. The women’s 5 km run then starts at 10:30 a.m. The Lopes women will be there Aleksandra Wegrzynowska, Summer Dean, Vivi Criscione, Maria Chatzi And Krisalyn Henderson.

This year’s field includes Biola, California Baptist, Concordia, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Pomona-Pitzer, San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Westmont and Whittier.

The team ranking in the college competitions consists of the results achieved in both the 5 km run and the relay race. The top three individual players and top relay team from each institution contribute to their team standings. Additionally, the top three collegiate swimmers in the men’s and women’s 5K events automatically qualify for the 5K USA Swimming Open Water National Championship and the CSCAA National Championship in December.

During the short break between the collegiate 5K and relay competitions, a Masters 5K and 1K race for adults ages 18 and older will take place starting at 12 p.m.

Last season, the Grand Canyon swim team made history by winning the overall title at the inaugural MPSF Open Water Championships, where the Lopes men’s and women’s teams each placed second.
