Both Green and Şengün are currently scheduled to become restricted free agents after the 2024-25 season.

Charania said that both Green and Şengün have received offers from the Rockets, but the Houston stars may need to test free agency to get a top dollar.

The deadline for a decision on an extension is Monday. The Rockets start the regular season two days later against the visiting Charlotte Hornets.

Green is currently set to play the 2024-25 season with a $12.5 million club option, while Şengün has a $5.4 million club option for the season.

Both are justified for a five-year rookie extension worth a maximum of around $225 million. Should either of them sign for that amount, they would be the first player to sign a rookie max extension since the Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo in 2020, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Şengün, who posted a career-high 21.2 points and 9.3 assists en route to third place in Most Improved Player voting last season, has told reporters multiple times this offseason that he is interested in a contract extension the team is interested.

“We talked. I want to get the contract and they are trying to negotiate with us, we are trying to negotiate with them,” Shengün told reporters in late September. “It was good. We’ll make sure it works. We still have time and hope we can do it.”

Meanwhile, Green, who grabbed a career-high 5.2 rebounds per contest and enjoyed an offensive surge in the late 2023-24 season, told Jonathan Feigen about it Houston Chronicle that he “definitely” wanted an extension, but was focused on the upcoming season and not his next contract.

“My main focus is the season ahead with the players we have. “We’re going to the playoffs and we’re going to go as far as we can,” Green told Feigen. “We build the team camaraderie that we are. That’s our main focus at the moment and everything will work itself out.”

Like the Philadelphia 76ers, who waited to partially extend Tyrese Maxey this offseason to take advantage of his free agent status, the Rockets could enter free agency in 2025 with more cap space if they acquire Green and Şengün -Delay deals until next summer noted by Marks.

Even if neither young star re-signs before Monday, the Rockets could still plan to build their future team around Green and Şengün, although their next contracts may have to wait until they reach restricted free agency next year.
