ChatGPT Windows app download is now available with restrictions

OpenAI introduced the first ChatGPT desktop app back in May when it introduced GPT-4o and Advanced Voice Mode. However, the app was limited to Macs with M-series chips. Windows users were left behind in this initial desktop foray, and that shouldn’t be a surprise. OpenAI has always focused on Apple’s platforms with its ChatGPT app. The iPhone got a standalone app long before Android, and we expected the same thing to happen on the desktop too.

In addition, Microsoft has its own AI tools for Windows, some of which are based on ChatGPT.

However, OpenAI is finally ready to let you run ChatGPT in a dedicated Windows app instead of a browser. The company announced the launch of its Windows app, which you can now download and run on your laptop or desktop. However, there are some limitations that you should be aware of before attempting to install it.

First, you must be a paying ChatGPT subscriber to install the Windows desktop app. A ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team and Edu subscription is enough to get started.

Secondly, you should know that the app does not give you a full ChatGPT experience. You can access the o1 model in preview mode, the ChatGPT variant that can argue. However, Enhanced Voice Mode available on web and mobile apps is not initially supported.

Finally, access to the ChatGPT app on your Windows work computer may depend on your company’s IT policies. OpenAI notes this in the small print of its download portal under this link.

The ChatGPT app should mimic the functionality of the web app. You get access to all your chats with the AI, change settings and upload files directly to the chatbot. With the key combination “Alt + Spacebar” you can access ChatGPT even faster via the new app than via the web version.

If you meet the requirements, you can immediately download and install the ChatGPT app for Windows by following this link. The app is available via the Microsoft Store. The link will take you there. As always, you should pay attention to where you get app downloads for apps like ChatGPT.

There’s good news for ChatGPT users on the free tier. OpenAI said on X that it plans to bring the full Windows experience to all ChatGPT users later this year. That’s not a bad promise considering we’re in the second half of October.
