(The Syndicate) Last month, metalcore legends Underoath returned with a new single “Teeth” and hinted at plans for a full album release via MNRK Heavy in 2025. Today they give another taste of what’s to come with the punishing new song “Survivor’s Guilt” and its music video, which the band self-directed during the tour and came to a final cut in less than 48 hours just last week, in collaboration with Jacob Moniz, their social media content director.

Of “Survivor’s Guilt,” its lyrical themes and origins, Spencer Chamberlain says, “I feel severe guilt for making it out alive while so many of my friends didn’t. There were many moments during my recovery where I felt guilty, and that’s crazy, but it’s a real feeling.

“The opening line explains it pretty bluntly. I haven’t done drugs for seven years and have lost eight friends in 2023 alone to the same demon I was entangled with. It’s a hard feeling to endure because it’s not like you.” I’m better than everyone else out there – you were lucky in every sense of the word, I got my shit together before it was too late, and I’m grateful now for every single day I wake up, especially because there was a time when I didn’t make it. I’m not sure I would do that.

He continues: “It was really fun working on the song. The chorus came from the first idea I put out there. I love it when a song has such a powerful vibe to the music that the vocals come out naturally. That’s what made it sad.” We’ve never had a song with that kind of swing before either, which is hard to do without it coming off as cheesy, but I love the way this song hits. I could probably say that about every song on the record, but this is one of my favorite Underoath songs ever.”

Speaking about the song’s stunning music video, guitarist Timothy McTague said: “We came up with the idea of making a music video for ‘Survivors Guilt’ as we really think the song is special and needed a visual representation to go with it. This is us.” We were on the longest tour of our lives and didn’t have time before we left, so we decided to shoot one of our own with our content creator Jacob Moniz. We spent the first few weeks of the tour bouncing ideas around and flew into Denver early in the day. We had a plan, but much like a song, you have an idea and if you let the project speak to you and give it control, some ideas we had come into their own better than we thought, other ideas turned into shots we didn’t know we could capture. We started filming on Wednesday at 5:30pm and had final editing before our show on Friday. I’m beyond impressed with the band and how we all worked hard and sacrificed many hours to get this done and I’m probably more proud of this video than anything we’ve done in years.
