New adaptation of American Psycho film in the works, Challengers director attached

American Psycho is getting a remake, with writer Scott Z. Burns (Side Effects, Contagion, The Bourne Ultimatum) set to make a new adaptation of writer Brent Easton Ellis’ classic novel and director Luca Guadagnino in “final talks” to direct. Guadagnino is best known as the director of the 2018 remake of Dario Argento Suspiriaand more recently, the steamy sports romance film challenger starring Zendaya. It should be noted that this is a new adaptation of the book – and not a remake of the original film.

Lionsgate and Frenesy Films are developing the new one American Psycho with Sam Pressman as executive producer. Pressman is also the son of Edward R. Pressman, the producer of American Psycho (2000).

“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming roster,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairman Adam Fogelson said in a statement. “Luca is a brilliant artist and the perfect visionary to create a completely new interpretation of this powerful and classic intellectual property.”

The first American Psycho (2000), writer/director Mary Harron’s film adaptation, was a box office flop ($34 million on a $7 million budget) but became one of the cult hits of the early DVD era. The film also made Christian Bale an international star, appearing as psychotic 1980s NYC yuppie Patrick Bateman.

American Psycho (2000) admittedly took some liberties in adapting Ellis’ novel – although it became notorious for some of its harsher scenes involving sex, murder – or a combination of both. This new adaptation, in modern times, could perhaps expand even further on the graphic details that have caused the novel to be censored in so many different places over the years; However, if Luca Guadagnino is the type of director being considered, this new version could apparently also play with the lines of fantasy, reality and satirical imagery that Ellis toyed with in his book.

This is new American Psycho The film is currently in development.
