The Ascension Texas executive director has been named chair of the American Heart Association’s 2024-25 Austin Go Red for Women movement

Meredith Wells, vice president of neuroscience and trauma service lines, leads the local movement to improve women’s heart health

AUSTIN, October 18, 2024 – Meredith Wells, RN and vice president of neuroscience and trauma service lines at Ascension Texas, will serve as honorary chair of the 2024-2025 Austin Go Red for Women® movement, a comprehensive platform developed more ago for more than two decades to raise awareness of women’s heart health and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women worldwide.

As chairman, Wells will play a critical role in helping women in Austin learn how to live longer by reducing their risk of heart disease and stroke. This year’s Go Red for Women Summit and Luncheon will be held on February 19, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the JW Marriott Austin.

“Women in particular must vigorously protect their right to equal and adequate health care,” Wells said. “Too often, symptoms in women are dismissed or misunderstood, particularly in heart and stroke disease, where symptoms may manifest differently than in men. Knowing your body and speaking up when something feels off not only gives you strength, but can also save lives.”

“We at Ascension Texas are proud to support Meredith in her role as chair of Go Red for Women,” said Andy Davis, president and CEO of Ascension Texas. “Our sponsorship of this important initiative aligns with our mission to promote heart and brain health while providing compassionate, personalized care for all. Leaders like Meredith help drive the meaningful change we seek in the communities we serve.”

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women and claims more lives than all cancers combined. Nearly 45% of women over 20 live with some form of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease and stroke remain the biggest health threat to women in Austin.

“I look forward to connecting with women of diverse backgrounds and experiences and working together to raise awareness and support for education, research and programs,” Wells said. “Your commitment is more than just a contribution: it is a significant investment in the health and well-being of our Austin communities. You never know – the person you help educate today could be the one responding to your health emergency or that of a loved one.”

Go Red for Women is sponsored nationally by CVS Health and the Austin Go Red for Women Summit and Luncheon is sponsored locally by Ascension Texas, Texas Mutual, Center for Neuro Skills and Encompass Health.
