Shriners Children’s Open was significantly delayed by high winds

Play at the Shiners Children’s Open has been delayed at least four hours because of high winds in the Las Vegas area.

First-round play, suspended Thursday evening due to darkness, was scheduled to resume at 6:55 a.m. local time on Friday, but was postponed – first for two hours, then four hours – when wind gusts of up to 50 miles gusted throughout the morning blew per hour.

PGA Tour Chief Judge Stephen Cox said the Tour delayed play to protect everyone involved, including operations staff, tournament volunteers and spectators at TPC Summerlin.

The earliest possible start time for the first round to resume is 10:55 a.m. local time (1:55 p.m. ET), with officials continuing to monitor the situation.

Temperatures are not expected to reach the 70-degree mark Friday, although winds should ease to gusts of about 25 mph throughout the afternoon.

Taylor Pendrith set the pace in the first round with 61 points and took a three-shot lead. Eight players have not yet played their first rounds.

Golf Channel coverage begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. ET.
