Woman of the Hour – Review | Netflix thriller | Based on a true story

The dating game killer

While the title of this film comes from the crazy fact that Rodney Alcala managed to be on a dating show while also being an active serial killer, this film is not about the dating show. If anything, this movie is like an anthology about serial killer victims and the dating show is the overarching story.

We continue to see what happened during “The Dating Game,” but it’s mixed in with flashbacks (and even flashbacks) to Rodney Alcala’s victims. There’s also an important focus on how women recognize other women in distress, while few men realize how dangerous Rodney is until he makes it very clear.

Women tend to feel it in their stomachs sooner, but because Rodney Alcala manages to make women feel safe first, he ensures that they are withdrawn and alone. Only when they have escaped prying eyes and possible witnesses does he turn around out of the charm and shows his true face.

Daniel Zovatto (It follows, Don’t breathe, The Pope’s Exorcist) is breathtaking and terrifying as Rodney Alcala. He’s so charming, to the point where he’s not. As soon as he turns off the spell, the women (and even some men who get in his way) instinctively sense it.

Maybe watch this with a woman

Anna Kendrick, the film’s lead actress and director, mentioned an element of the story that I think most women will be more familiar with than men. In this sense, watching the film with a woman can help men.

If nothing else, then just to ask them if they recognize the feelings or experiences shown.

Like how a woman shrinks herself and does her best to please. When a woman laughs at a man, she can quickly smooth things over and even demean herself to make him feel better.

It’s the old “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them.” “Women are afraid that men will kill them” by Margaret Atwood. However, part of Woman of the hour also shows how women can regain this power.

Sometimes without success, but sometimes it was enough to save yourself.
