A Boy Called Christmas Sequel Gets Status and Progress Update from Director (Exclusive)

Gil Kenan, the writer and director behind Netflix A boy named Christmas revealed where he is currently in the process of creating a sequel.

The story followed the story of Nikolas as told by an aunt to two children in her care, a little boy who would one day become Santa Claus after discovering the fabled village of Elfhelm.

The Netflix film was actually based on a book of the same name, which is the first of three in a series.

In 2021, speaking to Collider, Kenan confirmed that there were discussions about adapting more stories in this world. The author noted that if they can “Get a great script and hopefully we’ll keep telling these stories.”

Progress update on the sequel to A Boy Called Christmas

While promoting his upcoming film Saturday evening and I speak exclusively with Russ Milheim from The Direct, A boy named Christmas Writer and director Gil Kenan commented on the current status of a possible sequel.

When asked if there had been much progress since the last update in 2021, Kenan admitted there hadn’t been much.

However, he added that “There’s a story there [he] really want[s] tell”, Although the recent sad death of legendary actress Maggie Smith (who played Aunt Ruth in the original film) has caused Kenan to reconsider making a sequel:

“Not much [progress]. There’s a story I really want to tell, and I haven’t gone much further than that. I have to say that one of the most important characters for me in this first film was the character of Aunt Ruth, played by Maggie Smith. And of course she passed away tragically last week – not tragically, she lived an incredible life, [it’s] Sad for me – and that’s why I have to evaluate whether I can tell more stories in this world without her unique voice telling.”

The author admitted that Smith’s narrative “has created a perfect sonic window into this world:”

“Because I feel like it created a perfect sonic window into that world for me. But thanks for asking about this film. I’m incredibly proud of it, and as summer gives way to fall, fall begins to give way.” “To Winter” reminds me of what a joy it was to tell this story, and I hope audiences and families enjoy it Continue to make film a part of their holiday tradition.”

What to Expect in a Potential Boy Called Christmas Sequel

While it makes sense that people would be hesitant to move forward with one Boy named Christmas Continuing after Maggie Smit’s death, the stories could continue.

Each book in the series on which the first film is based focuses on a new story at a different point in Santa’s life as he grows and evolves.

The first story is when he is 12, but most of the second (called The Girl Who Saved Christmas) is when he’s in his early twenties and introduces a new protagonist named Ameilia Wishart.

As great as the narrative framework of Maggie Smith’s story was, the core of the story is still that of Nikolas and those around him in his magical world. However, she would of course be sorely missed.

If the creatives really wanted to go in an original direction, it could be based on the adult version of the children that Aunt Ruth originally told the story to, and how their paths might one day cross with Nikolas and Elfheim. This, in turn, could even include the revelation of Aunt Ruth’s true identity as Truth Pixie.

A boy named Christmas is now streaming on Netflix.
