“I refuse to believe this is a real thing.”

“I refuse to believe this is a real thing.”

Have you ever worn pants, looked at yourself in the mirror, and thought, “This outfit would be so much better if my pants… also had pants?”

If not, don’t worry; You are definitely not alone.

However, the “giga pant,” as one TikToker calls it, is a frighteningly real new fashion trend. While it sounds like a ridiculous piece of clothing that you might find on a fast fashion site like Shein or H&M, TikToker Maggie Weber (@refashionedhippie) spotted several (yes, several!) styles on Parisian luxury fashion brand Coperni’s website.

“It’s pants on pants,” Maggie says as screenshots of the fashion atrocity flash on the screen. “They even have little belts!”

Impractical fashion trends like this or similar microtrends highlight some of the worst aspects of capitalism, which encourages overproduction and overconsumption of goods, wasting valuable natural resources and further polluting the planet.

To make a profit, fashion companies have to constantly produce new styles, with sometimes up to 3,000 new styles being released per week, according to Business Insider.

This causes consumers to overconsume in order to stay up to date with the latest fashion trends. But as new fads emerge, clothing goes “out of style,” causing consumers to wear once-popular garments less and less.

Unfortunately, this means that much of trendy clothing ends up in landfill when it is no longer popular. According to the Guardian, clothing is one of the most commonly sent to landfills. According to the Guardian, an estimated 8 to 60 billion items of clothing are never sold. About 101 million tons of clothing end up in landfills every year.

Instead of participating in an endless cycle of consumption and waste, thrifting is a more sustainable way to score unique and stylish finds. Plus, shopping at local thrift stores is much cheaper than spending $1,070 on sophisticated Parisian pants. There are a plethora of online alternatives such as eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, ThredUP and Depop, to name a few.

Users in the comments on Maggie’s post had a lot to say about the pants on the pants.

“I refuse to believe this is a real thing,” one user wrote.

Another TikToker lamented the time before he knew the pants existed.

“I miss the person I was three minutes ago,” they said.

Another hilariously suggested their own ridiculous fashion idea, writing: “How about suspenders on suspenders because these pants on pants don’t stay on my thighs.”
