Gophers earn a football victory and the first two rounds of the Big Ten Tournament

Ally Childers’ first goal for the Gophers women’s soccer team led to a 1-0 victory over Maryland on Thursday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Childers, a graduate student from Michigan State, scored with 39 seconds left in the first half.

Goaltender Sarah Martin made a save for her fifth shutout of the season for the Gophers (10-3-3, 4-3-2 Big Ten), who remained undefeated at home (5-0-2).

The Gophers host Indiana on Sunday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The win came on the same day that the Gophers and the Big Ten Conference announced that the Gophers would host the first round and quarterfinal rounds of the Big Ten Tournament from October 31 to November 3.

The tournament’s semifinal round and championship game will be played Nov. 7-10 in St. Louis.

The top ten teams in the conference earn a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. After Thursday’s win, the Gophers are in ninth place.
