Nantucket Current | Sports Roundup: Boys soccer secures spot in…

This Whaler sports roundup includes updates on the boys’ soccer team, which just completed a stretch of three games in three days as state tournament time approaches, the girls’ soccer team and the volleyball team.

Boys soccer beats DY, loses to Monomoy

The Nantucket boys soccer team split two games this week and is now 7-2-4 on the season after a 3-2 win over the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins at home on Wednesday afternoon and then a 0-1 record -We suffered a defeat against the Monomoy Sharks on Thursday.

The Whalers’ seventh win also secured them their 20th winTh Playing in a consecutive state tournament because it guarantees they will finish with no less than a .500 record with five games remaining.

“The guys are doing really well,” said head coach Rich Brannigan II. “Our defense is tough to beat. We don’t allow many goals and if we can score a few we will be in most games.”

In the Whalers’ game against the Dolphins, DY scored the first goal in the 24th minute of the game, but the Whalers scored three goals in six minutes to take a 3-1 halftime lead.

The first goal was scored by freshman Aldo Lemus, who sprinted up the left sideline and fired a ball into the top right corner of the net a minute after DY’s goal to make it 1-1.

The second goal was a beautiful one-touch shot from Anderson Diaz that made it 2-1 with 10:17 left in the first half.

Senior captain Jake Johnson scored the third goal off a cross from Lemus to make it 3-1 with 9:13 left in the half.

The Dolphins made it a 3-2 game with 18 minutes left in regulation and had several chances in the final minutes of the game as Nantucket was stuck on their own. But the Whalers held their own and earned a one-goal victory for the second game in a row.

Brannigan said he enjoyed seeing his team’s strength on display as the season progressed, with several freshmen and sophomores taking on key roles for the team as it prepares for another state tournament.

“There are more guys playing more positions this year,” Brannigan said. “It’s not so much a trade against him, but a likes-to-likes trade. There are a lot of changes and adjustments, which is good because this experience should pay dividends as we move forward.”

On Thursday, the Whalers hosted the Monomoy Sharks, who are ranked No. 22 in the current MIAA power rankings. Nantucket lost 1-0 and Brannigan said he felt like his team just didn’t have its usual legs.

“Third game in three days and it showed,” Brannigan said. “The playing conditions were miserable. Our legs were heavy. We didn’t really find ourselves in the midfield, which we dominated when we were there two weeks ago. We dominated with six, seven, eight, ten, twelve passes. And we didn’t have it (today). There were a maximum of three or four passes, we didn’t have the midfield, and that was really the difference in the game. ”

Nantucket hosts Falmouth Academy on Saturday, October 19th at 12:30 p.m. It’s also the Whalers’ final game.

“Girls’ football excludes Monomoy”

The Nantucket girls soccer team improved to 7-3-3 this season after a 2-0 win over the Monomoy Sharks on Thursday afternoon. Junior Myah Johnson, who is in the midst of a fantastic breakout season, scored both goals for the Whalers.

Head coach Doug LeBrecht said the first goal was a 50-yard cross from senior captain Adney Brannigan and the second goal was a 40-yard strike from Johnson.

The Whalers are currently number 18 in the newest Div. 4th state tournament and will look to improve their record to 8-3-3 when they take on Falmouth Academy at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19

Volleyball loses to St. John Paul II

The Whaler volleyball team lost 3-1 to the St. John Paul II Lions on Thursday, dropping its season record to 5-12. The Whalers were led by senior Leah Crowley and junior Mariana Silva, who had five aces; Sophomore Viktoria Bozhkova, senior Rihanna Cranston and Crowley each had two kills; and senior captain and libero Vicky Todorova had 14 digs.

The sets of the game were as follows.

Set one: 21-25 SJP

Set two: 25-22 Nantucket

Set three: 20-25 SJP

Set four: 16-25 SJP

Nantucket will look to get back on the winning list when it takes on Archbishop Williams on Saturday, October 19th at 12:30 p.m

Friday, October 18th:

The football team hosts the St. John Paul II Lions at 5:30 p.m

Saturday, October 19th:

The Boys soccer team will face Falmouth Academy at home at 11:30 a.m

The Girls soccer team will be on the street across from Falmouth Academy at 11 a.m

The volleyball team will be on the road facing Archbishop Williams at 12:30 p.m

Sunday, October 20th:

The Field hockey team will host Marshfield High School at 11:30 a.m
