Dodgers vs. Mets result, live updates: Los Angeles looks to take a commanding 3-1 NLCS lead in Game 4 in New York

It may seem like a lifetime ago, but just nine days ago the Los Angeles Dodgers were in trouble in the NLDS, trailing the San Diego Padres 2-1 in the best-of-five series with Fernando Tatis Jr. the home runs left and right hit right.

However, the Dodgers found their rhythm and it actually started with LA’s pitching in the loss in Game 3. The Dodgers did not allow a run after the second inning of that game – a streak that continued for the rest of the series and into the NLCS. In the last five games, the Dodgers pitching recorded four shutouts, including in both of the team’s NLCS victories.

The Mets will need to find the offense they did in a 7-3 win in Game 2 to have a chance of tying this series, as the Dodgers’ potent offense is averaging 5.3 runs per in these playoffs game on, with 20 runs scored so far in the series.

On Thursday, the Mets turned to Jose Quintana, and the Dodgers countered with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who threw five innings of shutout ball in his last start, LA’s win over San Diego in Game 5 of the NLDS.

Live41 updates

  • Dodgers rookie Andy Pages fires an 88 mph sinker into his right wrist. He was clearly in pain, but it looks like he will stay in the game.

That’s now eight free passes given to the Dodgers lineup in this game (seven walks and the HBP). That’s almost an entire round in order, in a series where preserving the bullpen is important.

  • Max Muncy opened the seventh inning with a single. This gives Reggie Jackson the longest postseason on-base streak, and it is the only one done in a single season (a single series, no less).

  • Check that out, Blake Treinen comes in to end the inning. Jesse Winker greets him with a deep fly ball, but Mookie Betts catches it at the warning track. It’s another scoreless inning for the Dodgers bullpen.

Another aggressive move brings Treinen into the game, and it’s only the sixth inning.

  • McNeil hits a fly ball to center field, but it is caught and is too flat for Brandon Nimmo to score from third base. The Mets bring Jesse Winker into the game as a pinch-hitter, and the Dodgers respond by eventually drafting Phillips for the left-handed hitter Banda.

It was still a bases-loaded situation, but Phillips responded with two very big outs.

  • Phillips struck out Iglesias and stayed in to face pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil. That’s an odd decision from Dave Roberts considering Phillips has 28 pitches.

  • And now JD Martinez fights back from 1-2 to load the bases with a walk. The Mets’ bases are full with no outs, the end of the standings is approaching.

Dave Roberts opts to keep Phillips in the game to face right-hander Jose Iglesias. Anthony Banda and Blake Treinen are both warmer.

  • Evan Phillips remains in the sixth game after throwing nine pitches in the fifth game. Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte responded with back-to-back singles to open the frame.

Anthony Banda warms up for the Dodgers in a game that isn’t over yet.

  • It’s probably also worth noting that the Dodgers sat Freddie Freeman to rest his ankle and has now scored seven runs in six innings. That’s important both for this series and for the future if the Dodgers win one of the next three games.

  • Dodgers 7, Mets 2

Mookie Betts makes the Mets pay for beating Ohtani by breaking things open with a two-run home run. He hopped down the first-base line. The Mets now need to score five runs in four innings to avoid a 3-1 hole.

If Betts hits like Mookie Betts again…this Dodgers team will look a lot better.

  • Shohei Ohtani scores after his home run for the third time in the game, and these are not close balls. Mets pitchers threw a total of two strikes in his three walks. They’re clearly avoiding the zone and just hoping he can be roused into pursuit.

José Buttó leaves after two hours of work and is replaced by Phil Maton.

  • Evan Phillips struck out Vientos and received an easy fielder’s choice from Pete Alonso to end a scoreless fifth inning.

A wild stat from the FS1 broadcast: The Dodgers bullpen hasn’t allowed a run in a win this postseason.

  • The Dodgers have been one of the most aggressive teams with their bullpen this postseason, pulling their starters early and deploying their best relievers wherever there is a potentially high-leverage situation.

The question is whether this effort will cost them in a seven-game series after succeeding in a five-game series against the Padres. It’s less of an issue if they win tonight.

  • Yamamoto struck out Francisco Lindor for the first time, and that was done for him after 4 1/3 innings and 73 pitches. Dave Roberts brings in Evan Phillips to face Mark Vientos, who struck out Yamamoto in the first inning, and Pete Alonso.

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto hits Francisco Alvarez in the left thigh to open the bottom of the fifth, and the young catcher is clearly in pain. He’s limping around first base when the coach comes out to check on him.

It looks like he’s staying in, but now the question is how far the Dodgers will let Yamamoto (68 pitches) go in his third go through the order. Evan Phillips is warming up as the top of the Mets order approaches.

  • The record walk is free. José Buttó struck out Andy Pages to pitch a scoreless fifth inning.

  • Max Muncy draws a walk and sets an MLB record by reaching base for the 11th consecutive time in a single postseason. He can reach base once again and tie the overall record held by Reggie Jackson of 12 straight games between the 1977 and 1978 postseasons.

    We are all witnesses.

  • After a difficult third inning, Yamamoto gets through the fourth inning with a 1-2-3, 10-pitch performance. There were some audible boos at Citi Field after his strikeout against Harrison Bader.

Yamamoto struck out 7K on 66 pitches in four innings. A long start would be huge for the Dodgers after leaning heavily on their bullpen in Game 3.

  • Buttó brought in Teoscar Hernández with a flyout and Tommy Edman with a strikeout to end the threat.

The Mets need to get out of the hole against their former free agent target Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

  • Dodgers 5, Mets 2

Mookie Betts comes through with a double down the left field line, giving the Dodgers a three-run lead. Shohei Ohtani used his 59 steal speed to push himself from first place to the finish in this race.
