With the Nike contract expiring, the bidding for an NFL apparel deal remains “open and active.”

Nike acquired the NFL’s uniform and apparel rights in 2012. The current contract runs until 2027. It may not be renewed.

Ben Fischer from Sports Business Journal reports that Tuesday’s owners’ meeting in Atlanta included a presentation about Nike’s deal. The tender for the next deal is already “open and active”, with “several” companies involved.

Nike reportedly has the “inside track,” but current financial issues with the footwear and sportswear giant could make it difficult for Nike to meet the asking price.

Reebok had the deal before Nike. And as would be expected with Nike’s takeover, the last 13 years have seen a variety of new and alternative looks that have made the NFL closely resemble college football, with a range of jerseys, pants and helmets that reflect the base and designs change the classics.

As a proud member of the get-off-my-lawn club, I would have no qualms about removing the swoosh from my NFL jersey. If it means fewer changes for the sake of change and fewer alternatives for the sake of alternatives.
