West joined Golden State’s front office in May 2011 and accompanied the organization as it embarked on a dynastic run fueled by homegrown talents Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. He left after the Warriors’ 2017 Finals triumph.

West, who died in June at age 86, was a 14-time All-Star, 12-time All-NBA honoree and 1969 Finals MVP. However, what he accomplished as a leader may even surpass what he achieved as player has reached.

West was the architect of the Showtime-era Los Angeles Lakers, laying the foundation for their next dominant period by signing Shaquille O’Neal, selecting Kobe Bryant in the 1996 NBA Draft and hiring head coach Phil Jackson.

As general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies, West was named Manager of the Year in 2003-04, ultimately receiving the award for what seemed like a… Treasure deal with his old team. No one knew that Marc Gasol, who was traded for older brother Pau as part of the package, would become a three-time All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year.

The Warriors already had Curry when West arrived, but Thompson and Green were both draft picks when he was part of the front office. He saw something very special in Thompson.

The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami wrote about how West “urged” Golden State to select the 6-foot-1 sharpshooter in the 2011 draft and then “threatened to withdraw” if the Warriors decided to trade Thompson for Kevin Love to trade when the idea was at least on the table in 2014-15.

Green also praised West for providing constructive criticism and advice to the Warriors’ players, which helped them reach a level where they would win four titles in eight years.
