WCCD adds new sports and scholarships

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Wallace Community College welcomes new sports to campus with seasons beginning in fall 2025.

Baseball and softball were staples of the college, and now the athletic program is growing.

“It’s been a while since we’ve added any other sports here, but we’ve heard from the community, looked at it and thought carefully about it and we’re excited to expand it,” WCCD athletic director Ryan Spry said.

The school offers men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s cross country skiing.

There are 16 full scholarships available for golf – 8 for men and 8 for women.

Ten scholarships are also available for each cross-country skiing team.

WCCD Interim President Keith Phillips says the supplement is a marketing tool for recruitment and enrollment.

“We know that some of the talented students who would have chosen Wallace College chose another college because we did not offer additional athletic opportunities,” Phillips said. “These new teams will allow us to attract and support students from the Wiregrass who want to pursue both their education and their passion, because you play for passion.”

From here, the school begins its search for coaches. With them, the student-athletes, school leaders will bring talent, competition and a renewed school spirit.
