The Texas Tech football team is currently rewriting one of the narratives of the Joey McGuire era. In the first two years of the current head coach’s tenure, the Red Raiders struggled early in the season, going just 7-7 overall in September and October.

This year, however, Tech is 5-1 as of mid-October and could earn the right to play in a bowl game with a win against Baylor in Lubbock on Saturday afternoon. Currently, the earliest Tech has achieved bowl eligibility in a calendar year under McGuire is Nov. 18.

Of course, the Red Raiders have bigger ambitions than just getting into a mid-level or lower-level bowl game. Instead, Tech wants to play for the Big 12 championship.

To achieve this goal, McGuire’s team cannot afford any stumbling blocks this weekend. Because after Saturday, three of the next four games will be friendlies.

Like Tech, Baylor comes into this game after an open week. But you could argue that the Bears are the more desperate team.

After losing their first three conference games, they are looking to avoid a four-game losing streak. Additionally, their head coach Dave Aranda is on the hot seat in Waco.

On the other hand, one could argue that the Bears have little reason to play other than pride. At just 2-4 this season, they have yet to beat a team from a power conference.

Still, the Red Raiders enter this game as the hunted given their 5-1 start to the season and their 3-0 record in the Big 12. Since Baylor won five straight games in this series from 2011 to 2015, these two programs have split the final eight games.

Additionally, three of the final five games in the series were decided by one point. Therefore, Red Raider fans should be prepared for another thrill this weekend.
