Judge requests release of Michael Jordan’s father’s murderer

Gregory Weeks, who presided over Daniel Green’s 1996 trial, has asked the North Carolina Parole Board to release the prisoner because of a lapse during the trial.

A judge involved in the murder trial of James, the father of NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, recently requested that the man convicted of James’ murder be released from prison.

Accordingly ABC NewsGregory Weeks, who presided over the 1996 trial of Daniel Green, has North requested Carolina’s parole board is demanding the release of the prisoner convicted of Jordan’s murder. Green was sentenced to life in prison. After nearly 30 years in prison, Weeks said a forensic blood analyst working on the case failed to disclose that a blood-like substance discovered in Jordan’s vehicle may not have been his blood.

At the hearing, the analyst left this out, the Rev. Thomas Jones told the commission. The judge revealed that the frightening case had “never bothered him as much” as it did.

At trial, prosecutors alleged that Jordan was sleeping in the passenger seat of his Lexus when Green approached the vehicle and shot him. This information was given to them by Larry Demery, Green’s co-defendant, who also said that Green was the one who pulled the trigger. However, the analyst never indicated that other forensic tests from the car were negative or inconclusive regarding blood content.

Newsweek reported that Green, then 18, stated he was innocent of committing the murder, but he helped Demery deal with Jordan’s body after he was killed.

Daniel Green, who was 18 at the time of the crime, maintains his innocence in the murder itself, but admits his role in the handling of the body. But he explained his actions.

“Every day I live with the regret and pain and suffering that my youthful choices caused. I regret the harm my actions have caused the Jordan family.”

A spokesman for the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said ABC News that the Commission is expected to deliberate for at least a month before taking its decision.

Jordan was killed in July 1993 while sleeping in his car on a North Carolina highway.
